Our group experience was overall good, I think. I can not entirely speak for the others in my group. However, there were a few problems I encountered with using a Wiki. Our group collaborated well through the discussion page and our final write-up was good. While trying to edit the front page, however, I could not figure out how to view a new page that I created. Despite that minor problem, which I eventually figured out, I think using a Wiki is a good learning tool. It fosters online collaboration and allows for easy communication while in groups.
Professionally, one could use a Wiki to develop a presentation or have an online meeting. The Wiki would document all collaboration and workers could view their work long after completing the presentation or something of the sort. In the classroom, I would use a Wiki, as we did, for group work. I think that I can use a Wiki in my field, Social Sciences. I could use a Wiki to allow my students to create a group presentation. The Wiki would allow students to easily collaborate outside of the classroom and make for a better learning experience. Then the groups could simply show their final Wiki to the class as a visual aid during their presentation.

I agree with Adam. I thought our group collaboration and overall experience with Wiki was a good one. There were some difficult areas however with dealing with Wiki. Besides not being able to talk face to face about our page and what it should look like it was easier than I expected. However, editing the first page at fist was difficult. I tried embedding a video on our page and although we went over how to in class the week before, I could not fully remember and was not able to figure it out. Therefore, our page went without a video. It was not a completely bad thing though because I thought our page was a success even without it. There were many benefits to using Wiki though. The discussion board really helped us to easily and effectively communicate with each other. We were able to read each other's thoughts and responses not just when they were posted but also were able to go back in reread them. To go along with that, everything was kept on one page so we were able to see every response at once.
ReplyDeleteHow could I use Wiki in my profession? Either as a student or as a teacher it can be used to review certain topics and get different opinions. As a teacher, I can let students use Wiki to collaborate different ideas for projects and different assignments. They can easily access that from either school or at home. Just like we did, they are able to use the front page as a visual (as Adam said) and can collaborate all at once.
The wiki assignment was a great way to collaborate with the students in my work rather than meeting face to face. It is very useful for college students since most college students work as well as have other assignments for other courses to complete. I think the wiki would also be a great tool to have in higher grade level classes so the students can communicate with each other about assignments and group projects without meeting in class. I also think the wiki would be great to have parents get involved with so they can talk to other parents about helping students with their assignments they may be struggling with. I don't see a wiki being beneficial for younger students like first or second grade because most students that young cant have access to the computer or it may be too much for them to do. I thought the wiki assignment we completed was beneficial because we were able to collaborate on our own time to complete an entire assignment. It had its challenges because i wasn't sure how to do everything with the wiki. I think having a demonstration on how to use it would have been beneficial for me because i hadn't used anything like it before. It also has its challenges because if two people were editing the same page, it could get very confusing. Other than that, i think the Wiki was a great collaboration tool.
