Learning Theory Group 3-Wiki Debrief: Gina Giles

The use of a Wiki for our project in general was easy to use. We had the discussion board as a way to communicate and that helped us figure out who was researching what. It was nice to know that when I found my information, all I had to do was post it in the discussion section and I know that all of my group members would see it. Although some challenges occurred, such as not being able to get in touch with some group members, the final product looked great.

Wiki would be a great asset in the professional world. Students could use Wiki to generate group discussions as well as use it as a great way to share research and collaborate. Not only, could students use it to share information, but also to present information. The way Wiki allows a student to insert links in the home page is also a great way to incorporate other sites into the presentation. For the future when I am teaching Biology classes, a Wiki would be a great way for my high school students to complete group projects as well as use Wiki for study guides or study sessions. Also, the students could ask each other questions, and I could be able to see what students were having a hard time with and assist them.

  2. I liked using the Wiki for our project. I feel the Wiki's discussion board made communicating easy, although for our group there was little collaboration. The only aspect of the wiki I had trouble with was trying to make an anchor. Even the help instructions did not assist me in making anchors, so I linked to other pages instead.

Wikis would be great for group projects with students. An issue many students have with group projects is that they will do all of the work. With a wiki, even if that happens, the teacher can see who contributed what and see how equally the work was distributed. A challenge would be if students had trouble with the formatting (it is not the easiest to control).

A wiki can be used in a high school math class in a few ways. It could be used to study for tests, work on group projects about mathematicians or the background on a type of mathematics. It can also be used on group homework projects where each student can adjust the answers as they see fit (as long as the homework does not involve too many symbols).

  3. I think using Wikis is a great way for students to use many different sources for research and be able to cite it easily. For social Studies, Wikis can be used when doing a research project (independent or group) or quick homework assignments where students need to find certain resources online. Some challenges in using a Wiki include some confusion on adding the information to the Wiki. In groups, students would need to set up which student is going to do what because they will all be online at different times.
