Learning Theory Group 2 Wiki Debrief

A wiki is a great tool to use for collaboration in the classroom. It can be used for something like our class did or it can be used for an entire semester as a source for discussion and peer editing/help. It can be a great alternative for schools that don't have a blackboard site but wish to work together online. We began using wikispaces where I work as a tool for people to create their own work schedules rather than bog me down with hundreds of emails. It has made our scheduling process so much quicker and easier. One of the biggest challenges in using the wiki is making sure everyone using the wiki works within any set rules you may have. For example, all of my student employees know that if they erase something from the schedule that we will take disciplinary action against them. Nevertheless, I still expect someone to try and sneak by that and get rid of one of their shifts. we'll see what happens...

  1. A wikki is a great way for teachers to allow students to use technology in a well controlled environment. The benefits of using a wkki are that the teacher can always login and see what exaclty is being contributed by each student as well as if anything is negatively changed by any student. It also allows for students to pretty much express their responses or assigments not only in words but in pictures or videos as well, by simply posting them. A wikki would be a great way for a student or group of students to do a lab write up, another idea would be to allow some students to design parts of activities using the wikki and have others interact and respond. The only downside that I experienced with using the wikki myself is that if you dont particularly like to create webpages and get fustrated easily this could be a big step for you. Sometime the wikki deletes things that you dont want it to and it is not quite as user friendly as i would like. But all in all I htink it is a good tool.
