Seondary English/SS

Technology is something that my teachers loved to use in the classroom but barely did. One class I always used it in was Newspaper. While that seems obvious, piecing together the newspaper to final format was not always the easiest thing. I always though teachers did that. However, fitting lines perfectly together with the right sized captions was a job I had to learn to do. Every day in newspaper I worked a bit harder on the program that was on the computer to discover a bit more about it. It was more of a free based project than one with specific directions from the teacher. All she told me was how much room I had and what I had to fit onto it, after that, it was all mine. Being able to use this technology in school was to great advantage to me. By having this experience I find it easier to be able to design certain things and I gained more knowledge on the particular program (which of course I can't remember what it is).

  1. That's really neat. In my high school journalism class we did the writing and basic layout on computers but piecing everything together was still done by hand before it went to print. It was a rather annoying and cumbersome process and having a tool like this would have made things a lot easier and would give students a greater understanding of how modern newspapers are produced.

  2. I completely relate to this! I was first exposed to programs like PageMaker and Photoshop during my high school journalism classes as well. As EIC, I was given nearly full liberty to layout the pages. This forced me to learn the programs myself and experiment with designing digitally. Having that exposure in high school gave me an advantage on editorial internships and in journalism classes in college.

  3. That makes me wish I had done some yearbook or newpaper class. I like the fact that the teacher pretty much gave you freedom of expression but I didn't get the impression that you felt like you were left with no support. It seems hard sometime to find a balance between letting the student have freedom and not giving them enough instruction but it seems you felt like you got both. Sound like it was a lot of fun!
